You steady your nerves but you still can’t help wanting to be sure you have an escape route so you move quickly but quietly to the back door. Your fear is realized as you pull the door, its stuck. Placing the flashlight on your chest and holding it with your chin you grip the handle with both hands and pull with your entire body weight. You hear the door creak and feel it move and without warning it comes free and send you onto your back the flashlight bouncing to the floor next to you.
A cool breeze passes over you as you raise yourself up on your elbows; your eyes catch something in the yard. You squint as your right hand fumbles for the flashlight. You aren’t sure what it is you are seeing but as your fingers touch the flashlight you sit up and bring the light before you. Your mouth drops, it’s a dog. A dog! Why? How? Your mind flies with questions as you slowly move up to your knee trying not to arouse the creature. You move the light slightly, you see no collar no chain and soon you see little details, the dog looks very sick. Its front left paw has no fur and one of its ears is bend and chewed.
You move to a standing position and move the light when you noticed you don’t see a reflection, the eyes aren’t giving back any light. You can never recall seeing animal eyes that didn’t reflect light when it was shone onto them. Shuffling your feet ever so slowly you inch forward reaching for the door, the dog stands on all fours. You stop, your eyes twitch and you see the dog’s tail not only has no fur or any skin. The dog lowers its head and the instant you notice one of its paws lift off the dirt you swing the door and throw yourself against it. Breathing heavy you brace yourself expecting to have the dog throw into the door but nothing comes. A few moments pass and you finally stand upright and move the dusty crumbling drapes from the window on the door. You are startled to see the dog sitting calmly on the other side of the door staring up and you.
The dog snarls showing rotten broken teeth; you also notice why the light didn’t reflect in its eyes, it didn’t have any. You drop the drapes and the severity of things sinks in, you are now most likely trapped inside this house. Looking around the kitchen you wonder if you should barricade the door. You move toward a chair when a noise unsettles you worse then the dog had. A creak sounding like it came from the top of the stairs. Suddenly you remember where you were before the kitchen door slammed. The noise upstairs, the creaks that sounded like someone was walking around, they were now coming from the stairs.
You want to panic but you know its too late you already are, you must calm yourself and think rationally if you want to escape. Your options are too many, one of which is taking your chances with the dog. The basement seemed like a terrible idea but what other options did you have?
